Our client is a horticultural supply company primarily for the home gardening market in New Zealand and Australia.

From its very beginnings our client has prided itself on helping people grow.

They’ve been on the market for over 135 years and their Australian and New Zealand based teams now manufactures and distributes an extensive range of garden products and offer a range of gardening services. These include fertilisers, plant protection products, garden accessories, lawn seeds and potting mixes.

The manufacturing site in Wyee manufactures a range of composted organic and mineral fertilisers sold in Australia and NZ Market. The site composts and batches large volumes of pelletised and granular gardening products, packing and filling operations for products used in home garden care and commercial/export. We are looking to expand this range further through growth opportunities.
The manufacturing facility that operates 5 days a week on a 2-shift pattern (day and afternoon). Due to the seasonality nature of the business and changing customer demands we must remain a low cost yet agile supplier striving to meet our customer’s every needs.

The Role

The Process Engineer position has been established to ensure product compliance to all regulatory demands and support efficient operations of the Wyee production facility. This includes both the development and implementation of production
efficiency and continuous improvement opportunities on the site.

Responsibilities

Safety and Sustainability

  • Compliance with S & S charter
  • Evaluate opportunities from a Safety & Sustainability perspective
  • Participate in S & S programs
  • Participate in area 5S program

Product Quality

  • Ensuring products are manufactured to specification and compliant with regulatory authorities (e.g., APVMA, AQIS)
  • Approve concessions when required. When a concession is required, determine cause, and implement corrective action to prevent re-occurrence
  • Support prompt identification, communication, investigation and rectification of Non-
  • Conforming Batches, Product, Raw Material & Packaging (NCRs)
  • Support product and process improvement through root cause analysis of cause of NCR’s and concessions. Initiate and implement corrective actions as required
  • Monitor and provide feedback to procurement team on company vendor quality
    performance.
  • Promptly conduct rework root cause investigations and implement corrective actions.
  • Provide factory support to resolve product issues in a timely manner

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify and implement opportunities to reduce manufacturing cycle time and lower
    manufacturing costs while maintaining quality
  • Identify areas within the business for profit improvement, particularly operations and
    product formulations.
  • Identify/implement opportunities for efficiency improvements using Lean manufacturing
    principles.
  • Identify and manage waste reduction opportunities
  • Develop CAPEX solutions where required
  • Target consistent improvement in Production efficiency (OEE) on 2 key process lines as
    well as composting process
  • Daily analysis of OFS system (downtime recording) & mentoring T/L’s.
  • Conversion costs (cents/unit)
  • Maintain schedule adherence to >95%.
  • % Right first time & concessions
  • % NCRs
  • Reduction in stockpiling of site waste identified in quarterly audits.

New Product Development (NPD), Project Management

  • Contribute to NPD project teams to ensure effective production solutions for products developed for site
  • Working closely with business NPD team and site operations team to ensure NPD projects delivered in full and on time

Qualifications, skills and experience

  • Experience in continuous improvement and lean systems preferred.
  • Must be able to make recommendations for process improvement not only to improve plant efficiencies, but also reduce cost to manufacture, through simplification and maintenance opportunities.
  • SAP experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of process with mechanical attributes
  • Sound influencing and organisational skills
  • Problem solving / root cause analysis skills
  • Excellent communicator in both verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to think clearly and make quick decisions, as well as time and priority management
    in a fast paced, high-pressure environment
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills
